Much to my surprise, it seems as though the "spacing of the new fence planks" actually allow for more outside visible light to seep through than the old 10 year old fence did. The preferred wood around here is Western red cedar. I plan to use full dimension rough lumber from the best supplier in our area. I am being told to figure about 10,000.00 in materials alone for the length of fence and number of gates etc that I will need. Our fence boards are full 3/4" thick. This thicker board means less resistance to splitting and twisting, and older slow growth boards have a tighter grain to prevent shrinkage. 1x4 Cedar Fence Boards. 1x4 Cedar Fencing is a common and economical fencing option.
