I'm not a chevy guy but the 70 LS6 454 Chevelle had the fastest production street car 1/4 mile time in 1970, there is more than one source out there that has accurate info on the subject and backs it up. And if memory serves me correctly the 440 6pk had a faster time than the 426 hemi, the 426 just wasn't that fast out of the box.
